Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

The photos depict just one month’s worth of the congregation’s donations! Each Sunday our kids go through the sanctuary collecting items from Sojourners during a special time in the service. Using the BRAFB list of suggested items, we target a different food from week-to-week.

Pride Sunday

Meg and SusanOur annual celebration of Pride Sunday on the last Sunday in June was blessed by the presence and poetry of Meg Day. The potluck picnic that followed the service featured some wonderful cooking (as usual) and ample time to hang out with old and new friends alike.

Pride Month at Sojourners

The month of June has been a time for Sojourners United Church of Christ to celebrate our being an Open & Affirming congregation. Each year we have done something different as a way of reminding ourselves about our call to be an inclusive community and also be intentional about expanding our understanding. Our growing and learning as a community of faith is never ending … thanks be to God.

This year our theme is LIVING with PRIDE:

As a church      As an ally       As a family       As an expression

June 4   Pentecost Sunday, we will RE-affirm our call to be an ONA congregation.

June 11  Many in our congregation will be at national events in Washington D. C. and local events during worship. Our focus in worship will be exploring what it means to be good allies as people of faith.

June 18  We will honor the diversity of families.

June 25   We will have a special guest. Meg Day is an internationally renowned poet who is on the faculty of Franklin & Marshall College. Meg will preach about Poetry in Proclamation. Our annual Pride Potluck Picnic in the Park follows this service. Bring a dish to share and a lawn chair or blanket as you’re able.

During our Sunday morning worship you’ll notice the Rev. Dr. Susan Minasian lifting up a small card. The congregation is invited to take one and hand some out to other people. Her hope is that we will “sit with” the quote or word on the card during our daily or weekly practice; to take a few minutes each day to just be in the present moment and sit in silence with the card.  She notes, “if you get any insights you want to share, let me know. I would also be interested in hearing if any of you are interested in creating a series of SIT WITH IT cards for future weeks. Enjoy!”

This week’s card comes from Hemingway and reads “We are all broken, that’s how the light gets in.”

Palm Sunday (April 9) we will experience our worship service as a journey from palm to passion. On Maundy Thursday (April 13) we will observe a Tenebrae service at 7:00 pm. It is a service of lessons accompanied by the gradual extinguishing of lights; contact Susan to be a reader. There will be a Sunrise Service on Easter (April 16) at 6:30 am on Carter’s Mountain (Rt. 53) and an 8:00 am breakfast at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church (750 Hinton). We will gather for a celebratory Easter Sunday at 10:00 am at Sojourners.

The group will meet again April 10 to begin a conversation about Richard Rohr’s book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life. All are welcome. Obtaining and bringing along your own copy of the book (conventional or digital) will greatly enhance your experience.

Welcome Susan Minasian!

Our new called pastor, the Rev. Dr. Susan Minasian, became a member of Sojourners on March 5. The Pastor Search Committee participated in various ways in the service — from providing the Gathering Music to serving communion and preaching the sermon. This coming Sunday, March 12, we look forward to Susan leading the service. Join us!
