Two Upcoming Community Events — September 16

Sojourners is co-sponsoring an interactive workshop, “Responding to Hatred Without Hating: Dialogue Skills for Difficult Times” 9:00 am – 3:30 pm at Unity of Charlottesville (2825 Hydraulic Rd.). Details about the event and registration: http://bit.ly/respondtohatred

Once again Sojourners is excited to be tabling at the Cville Pride Festival  11:00 am – 7:00 pm. This “free, family-friendly event offers people throughout Central VA and beyond the chance to celebrate and experience the diversity and vibrancy of the local LGBTQ community.” This year the venue has been shifted to a larger space, the Sprint Pavilion, downtown. Stop by the table for your very own rainbow tattoo! More information here: http://cvillepride.org/2017-cville-pride-festival/

The Alyssa House

The Alyssa House will be “Going Gold” in September in honor of Childhood Cancer awareness month. Check out the website, www.TheAlyssaHouse.org, or visit the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thealyssahouse/ for updates throughout the month on ways you can get involved. We welcome your support!

The Alyssa House strives to continue meeting the needs of the families and children that stay with us as generously as possible. In true Alyssa fashion, nothing is more important than family.

Gathering the Waters

This annual service will be held September 24. You’re invited to bring a water sample from home, favorite swimming spot, or summer travels to be pooled as we individually offer blessings for our church family and community. Later, the water is boiled and saved for baptisms.

Habitat Work Day — October 7

Mark your calendars now!  Our next Habitat Work Day is coming up  Saturday, October 7.  As a Sojourners volunteer, you will be guided by professional Habitat staff, and likely work alongside a future Habitat homeowner!  We need lots of volunteers to step forward, to help make the dream of home ownership possible for a Charlottesville family.  Please contact the church office to learn how to participate as part of the team.

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

The photos depict just one month’s worth of the congregation’s donations! Each Sunday our kids go through the sanctuary collecting items from Sojourners during a special time in the service. Using the BRAFB list of suggested items, we target a different food from week-to-week.

Pride Sunday

Meg and SusanOur annual celebration of Pride Sunday on the last Sunday in June was blessed by the presence and poetry of Meg Day. The potluck picnic that followed the service featured some wonderful cooking (as usual) and ample time to hang out with old and new friends alike.

Pride Month at Sojourners

The month of June has been a time for Sojourners United Church of Christ to celebrate our being an Open & Affirming congregation. Each year we have done something different as a way of reminding ourselves about our call to be an inclusive community and also be intentional about expanding our understanding. Our growing and learning as a community of faith is never ending … thanks be to God.

This year our theme is LIVING with PRIDE:

As a church      As an ally       As a family       As an expression

June 4   Pentecost Sunday, we will RE-affirm our call to be an ONA congregation.

June 11  Many in our congregation will be at national events in Washington D. C. and local events during worship. Our focus in worship will be exploring what it means to be good allies as people of faith.

June 18  We will honor the diversity of families.

June 25   We will have a special guest. Meg Day is an internationally renowned poet who is on the faculty of Franklin & Marshall College. Meg will preach about Poetry in Proclamation. Our annual Pride Potluck Picnic in the Park follows this service. Bring a dish to share and a lawn chair or blanket as you’re able.
